Sherry Sklar began her fashion education as an editorial staffer at acclaimed Mirabella Magazine working under Creative Director Jade Hobson Charnin and Publication Founder, Grace Mirabella, former Editor In Chief of Vogue Magazine. She had an opportunity to learn first- hand from the very best editors, art directors, artists, writers, models and photographers, and understand the process undertaken to put together a high fashion magazine each month. From there she relocated to Los Angeles and began working on a variety of independent films, commercials and music videos in the wardrobe and art department.
Ms. Sklar worked at legendary Western Costume Company while gaining her foothold in the industry and applying to fashion design school to further her skills and education. She was accepted on merit scholarship at Otis College of Art & Design, formerly affiliated with Parson’s School of Design. While enrolled in the fashion program, Ms. Sklar studied fashion illustration with esteemed professor Kathryn Hagen and LA celeb designer Eduardo Lucero.
Completing her course of studies she began working freelance as a sketch artist and designer for several manufacturers in downtown Los Angeles, before relocating back to New York City to design the costumes for a computer game for young girls starring Olympic Gold Medalist Kristi Yamaguchi. The game subsequently won an award for “Best Game for Girls” during the year it was published from Working Mother Magazine.
Ms. Sklar was the President of Phoenix Art Museum's Arizona Costume Institute and is an Associate Member of Society of Illustrators located in New York City. Ms. Sklar currently resides and teaches privately in New York City and lives part-time in Phoenix, Arizona, where for the last six years she taught illustration and design at Mesa Community College in their Fashion Design and Merchandising program. Ms. Sklar will tutor at any level, teaching you how to draw, how to sketch, how to paint and how to draw people, developing the student's fashion sensibility, familiarity with different media and understanding of the elongated fashion figure proportion.
